Better than football, barbecues, and pools, backyard hydroponics systems are popping up across America as the smart way for families to take control of the food on their tables. Growing your own vegetables not only saves money and water, it's an incredibly rewarding hobby that the entire family can be a part of. Keep reading to hear more about Backyard Hydroponics, and learn from some of our favorite hydroponic gurus!
BACKYARD BEGINNINGS 101
Let's be honest -- setting up your own hydroponics systems seems pretty daunting. You don't have a huge backyard, it seems awfully scientific, and you're last batch of tomatoes from the garden didn't turn out so well. But the beauty of hydroponic systems is how easy they are to scale to your needs. There is a hydroponic solution for commercial farms to small herb gardens.
There are some great resources out there to help you get set up, but we can't recommend Kieth Roberto's How-to Hydroponics enough for the beginning backyard hydroponics pupil. It's detailed but concise, and gives you a clear understanding of the do's and don'ts of any hydroponic system.
INTERMEDIATE BACKYARD BUILDING
We've been really into FesterWerks, a free series of Youtube videos that delve into the nitty-gritty of larger backyard hydroponics. Marc, like Brock, is a great teacher and provides good detail along with his videos. Let him take you from start to finish in your garden, and soon you might be the one teaching your neighbors.
Our co-founder and hydroponics guru Paul has done a few videos of his own, covering pH, natural fertilizer, and FloraKleen.
ADVANCED SYSTEMS SEMINARS
One I am particularly fond of is the Australian site Practical Hydroponics and Greenhouses. While the entire site is worth looking at, backyard hydroponics mavens should check out their expansive and searchable Reader Inquiries section.
Still itching for sustainable, affordable fresh food in your backyard? Then maybe it's time to move on to aquaponics (who doesn't love fish?!). But that is a different major entirely!
